18 months ago we had an 18 per cent vacancy along Mount Gambier’s main street. With two indoor shopping centres, Commercial Street is no longer the retail shopping hub of old. Owners now need to consider how to attract a different type of tenant. 

Many of the fashion boutiques have relocated to the comfort of indoor centres. In replacement, these retail spaces have been taken up by service providers, health and consulting practitioners, and restaurants. 

The newer tenants are helping to turn Commercial Street into a destination with a distinct reason to visit by day; for health, home and financial needs. Where, by night, it remains alive with restaurants offering alfresco dining.
